In the form of a gripping chamber drama, *Boy from Heaven* tells the story of a fierce succession war within Al-Azhar Mosque, an institution that serves as both a university and a key center of power in Egypt. Amine Mestari’s documentary reveals the origins and behind-the-scenes aspects of this political thriller, as well as the ongoing conflict between the Egyptian government and religious leaders over control of the country. It also portrays a filmmaker, born to an Egyptian father and Swedish mother, who lives between two worlds—”exactly where every artist should stand.” Banned from entering Egypt for being deemed too critical of the regime, he still dreams of returning.
