Jacques Demy directs The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg in 1963.
Geneviève and Guy fall in love in Cherbourg, in 1957. A first love, victim to a war without a name, the war in Algeria. Guy is called up to serve, leaving Geneviève behind, pregnant and broken-hearted. The young woman, now a single mother, marries to keep up appearances.
Between American rock’n’roll, jazz, French yéyé music and English pop, young Baby boomers proclaim themselves through music. The film is the dream realized of a « complete » movie, entirely sung like an opera and lit like a painting of Matisse. A Palme d’Or in Cannes in 1964, the film is the fruit of complete complicity with Michel Legrand, the multi-talented musician. Jacques Demy discovers his muse : Catherine Deneuve. He would make her the princess of this movie, and a star.
